Keeping your lawn green and weed free can be a simple but difficult task. Remember, your lawn needs just 3 basics to keep it green and healthy all season long:
- Consistent Lawn Mowing
- Full Year Fertilizing
- The Right amount of Water
Regular Lawn Mowing:
Our Professional Lawn Mowing service is customized and created to fit each customer's specific needs (including frequency, height of cut, bagged/discharged). Let us know what you are looking for and we will be happy to accomodate you.
Each time we cut your lawn, we will cut it to a height suitable for the season, trim the edges, and clean up the errant clippings around the driveway, sidewalk, and street leaving a crisp and clean finish. We use the best equipment available and maintain it to the highest standards to ensure a consistent, quality cut and finished product.
Bagging vs. Discharging:
More often than not, bagging the clippings is the way to go, however discharging has its benefits. Bagging the grass always leaves a crisp look to the lawn when it's finished but can be robbing the grass of shade and nutrients, especially during the summer. When the days are long and hot, lawns tend to burn, and discharging (also as mulching the grass) once in a while is a way to help prevent this from happening. Also, discharging the grass after a recent fertilizer treatment allows more of the fertilizer to stay in the grass.
Other Lawn Care Services:
Lawn De-Thatching:
De-Thatching a lawn is a great way to get all of the dead grass (thatch) out of your lawn which allows it to come in thicker. This is generally done in the spring to "wake up" the lawn after the winter and to get the dead, matted down grass out, but can be done at any time during the season. De-Thatching can also be done to get old leaves and pine needles out of your lawn as well.
Core Aerating:
Core Aerating (shown to the left) is a way to allow air, water, and nutrients deep into the lawn roots. Aerating is also a great first step before slice-seeding or regular overseeding, because the cores create a fresh layer of loam for the seed to take root in. Although the finished product looks less than steller, the benefits really outweigh the costs.
Overseeding vs. Slice-Seeding:
The differences between overseeding and slice seeding can be substantial. First, overseeding is the general name for re-seeding an existing lawn and is done in the spring or fall. Basic overseeding only requires a broadcast spreader to spread the seed over the lawn whereas Slice-Seeding, a specific type of overseeding, uses a special machine. Both are best done after a Core Aeration. The Slice-Seeding machine breaks up the cores while slicing lines into the ground for the seed to be planted allowing for a higher new-growth percentage. Both are done using the appropriate type of grass seed and the application of starter fertilizer is required.
Fertilizing and Soil Treatments:
NorthShire Landscaping does offer a 5-Step fertilizer schedule with both traditional and organic options. We also offer several types of soil treatments for your lawn including lime and gypsum treatments.
